Nearly six years ago, six years on January 19th, we (my sister and I) set out for an undetermined length of traveling the world. 12 countries and 5.5 months later we returned home July 3rd surprising family and friends. One of my favorite photographs was a photo from Den Helder, that have a series of doors. The Netherlands doors are favorite because I’m curious of the stories behind the doors.

Available in Gallery + Shop in prints and canvases.

Photography should inspire emotions and tell a story

That is something I’ve been sure of in my journey of photography. Color, emotions, textures, how you compose the frames, lighting, and so much more are part of what makes a story. Not every photograph is going to stop someone in their tracks, but every photograph at least should tell a story.

New or Old, black and white or color, smooth or rough…combinations they are vital to how we view our world. The Netherland doors stand test of times and sea. It was a 10 mins walk back or should I say meandering from the beach when I saw them by the water’s edge. It stopped me in the tracks. For a moment I took in alls beauty and then it occurred to me to capture its beauty. I am thankful that I did.

As a photographer ALWAYS carry your camera with you

Even if it’s the phone, I always have my camera on me. Though I much prefer my “baby” as I call her, I have photographed impressive photos with my phone that can hardly have been told the difference. Yes, camera’s make a difference, but the greatest difference of them all is the artist behind the camera. The thing about photography is that it is deceptively easy. But it’s hard to capture an emotional connection, to create a story, and to reflect life that is accurate to the person, animal, or an object themselves.

It is my hope with the Netherlands Doors to inspire creativity within you. To help you dream and go beyond the surface. Ask questions, musing on the beauty before you, gathering curiosity to either find doors yourselves or maybe even open up a few to new worlds. That you feel encouraged or have a sense of beauty that inspires something within to see the world in a different way.
